Léko welcomes the new bill to bring French legislation into line with European requirements for packaging made from non-recyclable styrenic polymers or copolymers. This initiative, tabled on June 4, 2024 and published on the Senate website on October 15, 2024, would postpone the ban initially scheduled for January 1, 2025 to January 1, 2030, enabling manufacturers to adapt to the new European recyclability requirements.
This follows on from Article 23 of Law no. 2021-1104 of August 22, 2021, known as the "Climate Resilience" law, which provides for a ban on extruded polystyrene (XPS) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging in France. However, with the draft European "PPWR" regulation on packaging and packaging waste planning to impose an assessment of the recyclability of these materials by 2030, it appeared necessary to adjust the French legislative framework to avoid any risk of overtransposition.
Léko fully supports this postponement, which would not only ensure consistency with European obligations, but also give industrial players time to develop viable recycling or alternative solutions for these materials.
As a partner to companies in their transition to a more sustainable model, Léko is committed to supporting the establishment of this sector and promoting recyclability practices that comply with current standards.
